Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Asalaam Aleikum,

I believe that homosexuality is a form of fitna--testing that happens to some people. Fitna happens when we are confronted with temptations or problems. If we overcome them, Inshallah, Allah is pleased with us. This gay person may be very nice in all other respects, but as a homosexual, he/she is having desires that are not appropriate for a Muslim who has fear of Allah in his/her heart. Acting on homosexual desires is forbidden in the Holy Quran. Please look at Surat Al Lut.
As Muslims, we must only take people as friends who will help and inspire us to have deen and iman. A person who has homosexual desires is not a good person to take as an wali (friend, protector)because he/she is wavering in the deen. Also, if your friend is a non-Muslim, you should not keep him/her close to you, since non-Muslims can not be our Auliya (plural of wali, friend/protector) See Surat Al Maida about this.

If this person is a Muslim, please pray for this person to keep him/her from giving into fitna, and to stay on the path of Allah (swt). Also, offer Islamic advice to your friend and show him/her Surat Al Lut, or other sources of Islamic perspectives on homosexuality, which can be found online.
In the mean while, do not keep this person as a close friend. Allah knows best.
