Asalaamu alaikum. I am looking at the possibility of homeschooling my 3 1/2 year old son when I marry, insha Allah. I have access to a lot of information on curriculum etc., and actually I do homeschool him on the weekends anyway. What I am unable to find information on is the legal issues involved with homeschooling. I have heard often that you must be a certified teacher to legally homeschool your children. I have also heard that they must take many tests to prove that you are teaching up to the academic standards of your state. I realize some of the laws probably vary from state to state, but would appreciate any information I can get, insha Allah. I like to think that homeschooling should fall under religious freedom, but I hear that is not the case. If any sister homeschools and has had to deal with any legal issues regarding it, I would like to know what I am getting myself into, insha Allah. Please share your experiences.

Asalaamu alaikum.

it depends on your state if in the US or your country. Do a seach for homeschooling on the Web, go to your local libarey for information, look in the phone book, or find out if anyone you know is homeschooling or knows someone you is. I would warn you that many homeschooling groups are fundalmentist christian in belief and just be careful. there are also many that are not. i was homeschooled and it is the best choice. I am in New York State and we have to submit a letter of intent, an IHIP and four quartarly reports each year for each child to the school district we are in. if you want to you can e-mail me with questions. -786- Asslaamu 'Alaikum Sister Aaminah, I have been a homeschool educator for 32 years and I have homeschooled my seven children and eight grandchildren. I have lived in Florida, Washington state, Colorado, Alabama and now Georgia. Each state has its own requirments and also its support groups. You can contact the Board of Educaiton in your area, the local library and the local homeschool groups in your area and also the internet for information concerning your state. There are many avenues that you may choose to use in creating a curriculum or using others, just remember to keep accurate records and attendance and maybe utilize your local college school of education to tap into using their testing facilities for your students or independent testing resources for assessing their progress. May Allah guide you and I pray that you have many happy years of teaching your children as I did, Amin.
